Description: The body is spindle-shaped and the frayed head. It is directed towards the ground and carries 3 pairs of barbillons. The sides are clear with brown spots laid out in 4 longitudinal bands connected by dark transverse bars, which give a reticule aspect. At the youthful ones, the dark spots are black and draw the links of a chain. Sometimes the fins transparent are marked yellow, the dorsal and the caudal one presenting thin darker bands.

Description : Le corps est fusiforme et la tête effilée. Elle est orientée vers le sol et porte 3 paires de barbillons. Les flancs sont clairs avec des taches brunes disposées en 4 bandes longitudinales reliées par des barres transversales sombres qui donnent un aspect réticulé. Chez les juvéniles, les taches foncées sont noires et dessinent les maillons d’une chaîne. Les nageoires sont transparentes, marquées parfois de jaune, la dorsale et la caudale présentant des minces bandes plus sombres.

Comportement : Poisson remuant et très joueur .Mais il ne dérange pas les autres habitants. Très sociable. Souvent considérés comme une espèce crépusculaire, ils sortent volontiers de leur cachette pendant la journée s'ils se sentent en sécurité dans leur bac. On peut parfois entendre la nuit après l’extinction de l’éclairage des sons secs et claquants assez surprenants ; on en ignore la signification. Ce poisson s’effraye rapidement au moindre bruit violent provenant de l’extérieur.

Nutrition : omnivore. Tous les aliments sont acceptés, même congelés, mais sa préférence va incontestablement aux proies vivantes :(tubifex, vers de vase, artémias, daphnies larves de moustique, cyclops. Les aliments lyophilisés aquariophiles ou en poudre sont avalés en surface. Un apport régulier d’épinard poché ou de laitue ébouillantée lui est également bénéfique. Souvent présentés comme des mangeurs d'escargot, ils vont effectivement s'en prendre aux invertébrés du bac y compris aux crevettes, mais cette nourriture ne leur suffit pas.Il se régale des escargots du bac, s’il y a des ampullaires dans le bac, leur durée de vie après son introduction est de 2 jours maximum.

Prévoyez une crépine .L’eau du bac doit être bien filtrée .le renouvellement est primordial pour son maintient en bonne santé. Lors de la manipulation de ce poisson ,il est conseillé d’utiliser un filet à mailles larges pour éviter d’accrocher les épines érectiles qui se trouvent sous chaque œil.
