Betta splendens

Betta Splendens : Pict0312

Classify: Actinopterygii.

Order: Perciformes.

Family: Osphronemidae.

Kind: Betta.

Species: Splendens.

Synonym (S) or Name (S) common (S): Betta splendens (sci). Combatant.

Maximum size:

Weight:

Origin: South Asia is Thailand, Laos, India and Malaysia.

Zone of life: Medium and surface.

Temperature and pH: Min: 24° max: 30° and 28° for reproduction pH: 6 to 7,5.

Description:

Nutrition: Flakes, alive and freeze-dried.

A combatant of Siam is a carnivorous fish; it prefers the artémias and the larvae of mosquitos.

Anatomy:

Behaviour: Two males never should be put together.

One should not especially make cohabit the betta splendens with guppys, if it y' has really a fish to avoid with the splendens it is well that there.

The platys and xyphos, the mollys are also a very bad choice because the betta often confuses all these fish and identified like males (long tail of the guppy, bright colours…) without speaking that quality about water asked by viviparous and the completely different one from the needs for a splendens.

I point out that Betta splendens is a territorial and solitary fish, male like female.

One should not thus make cohabit bettas units, even females between them. It is to impose a considerable stress to them.

Dimorphism: The female has dull colours and short fins.
The male has the fins in veil and of the bright colours.

Reproduction: For the reproduction, you put the female in one to ponder so that the male sees it but cannot reach it. Once the female is ready, (it with the abdomen more rebounded and the stripes vertical will appear) the male of sound with dimensions prepares the nest of bubble.

There you can slacken the female and a track race starts. The coupling lasts a few hours. The male recovers eggs in its mouth to go to stick them in the nest of bubbles; it wants to better remove the female because it is likely to eat eggs. The blossoming with 24:00 place after the laying, the alevins approximately remain suspended on the nest during 36H.

The Council for the aquarist: The betta slendens is a fish easy to maintain. Little to live in a minimum of water. Not to put two males together, one can put female at it and gets along well with small fish (guppy, platy)

Various: The combatant is the national symbol of Thailand, or it is high since 6 century.
