Food of the larvae : Cyclops and of the nauplies of artémias.

Dimorphism : unknown. The female is in general taller than the male.

Reproduction: The fish are sexually ripe when they reach 30 cm. One keeps some several so that the couples are formed. Before the abrasion, the ventral part of the two parents swells. The female lays its eggs on a solid substrate, sheltered by stones. Eggs of 3à 4 mms diameter .5 to 11 days. The abrasion itself with place the night .30 hours after, certain embryos move already in eggs. The male and the female take care on the laying and renew water by movement opercula’s. The 2 parents often take eggs in their mouth, apparently to clean them and help the embryos to tear the envelope of it. They chew egg during a few seconds and one often sees alleviant leaving the mouth. Some 7 mm length embryos leave the ones after the others during one week. Endogenous food (starting from the vitelline bag) lasts about a week. During the day, the alleviant hides; he seeks his food only the night. This is why it is very difficult to realize of its presence in the aquarium. For the period of reproduction the couple spawning time with interval brought closer, often even when alleviants of the preceding abrasion. The presence of the parents is thus essential to the survival of alleviant.

Difficulty : moderated on level 3.

The Council for the aquariophilie : rare availability.

Volume minimal of the aquarium and advised: 100 cm with 500 L .

Population density: 1 per vat.

Various: The family of Notopteridae is composed of the kinds Notopterus Lacépède, 1800 and Xenomystus Günther, 1868. The dorsal fin allows distinger without difficulties the two kinds: the species of the Xenomystus kind do not have any.

Zone de vie : Inférieur.

Taille maximale : 60 cm .
