Synonyme(s)ou Nom(s) commun(s) : poisson chat, catfish
Taille maximale : le poisson chat mesure en moyenne entre 15 et 25 cm pour un poids dépassant rarement les 300 g.
Origine : Ce poisson est originaire de l'Amérique du nord ainsi que du sud est du Canada. Suite à de multiples introductions, il est actuellement présent dans toute l'Europe occidentale sauf en Espagne, Italie et Scandinavie. On le rencontre aussi bien dans les étangs que les rivières et canaux. En France ce poisson est apparût en 1871 et depuis ce poisson a colonisé l'ensemble du réseau fluviale.
Zone de vie : Il vit dans les eaux calmes des cours d'eau et des étangs. C’est une espèce benthique qui vit par conséquent sur le fond.
Température et pH : de 10° à 25° et ph proche de la neutralitéDescription : Ce poisson possède un corps légèrement élancé et dépourvu d'écaille ce qui donne une sensation visqueuse à sa peau. Il possède une tête large et aplatie munie d'une large bouche munie de multiples petites dents ainsi que de 8 grands barbillons (d'ou le nom de poisson chat). Ces 2 nageoires pectorales ainsi que la dorsale comportent un rayon épineux très dur et douloureux en cas de piqûre. Petit le poisson chat est de couleur noire et en grandissant il s'éclaircit pour devenir brun-vert sur le dessus et jaune sur le ventre. Ce poisson est également très résistant et peut vivre jusqu'à 3 heures sans eau.
Nutrition : Omnivore, le poisson chat est un poisson très vorace qui se nourrit de tout ce que les autres poissons ne mangent pas. Il mange également toutes sortes de vers, les poissons morts ou malades, mais également les œufs des autres poissons.Comportement : C'est un poisson calme mais extrêmement vorace qui se nourrit de tout ce qu'il trouve mais surtout des œufs des autres poissons. Il n'est pas craintif du tout car ce poisson ne possède presque pas voir aucun prédateur.
Dimorphisme : Pas de dimorphisme sexuel constaté.
Reproduction : Le poisson chat est apte à se reproduire après 2 ou 3 ans. Il se reproduit au printemps (entre mai et juin), lorsque la température de l'eau est voisine des 18°C. La reproduction a lieu sur un nid préalablement préparé par le couple géniteur, en vase ou en sable. La femelle dépose alors de 1000 à 3000 œufs dans le nid et c'est ensuite le mâle qui protège et entretient les œufs durant la durée d'incubation (8 à 10 jours). Après l'éclosion, les alevins forment de très grosses boules noires (souvent en surface les jours de chaleur) et grossissent très vite.Conseil pour le pêcheur : Il faut savoir que le poisson chat est considéré comme une espèce nuisible car il s'est avéré qu'il peut engendrer des déséquilibres biologiques, il est donc interdit de remettre cette espèce a l'eau en cas de capture sous peine d'amende.
